Ethical Collection Development Resources
Public Library Disability
Collection
I chose three books that I think would be beneficial to add to a collection that is geared toward patrons with disabilities. It includes the book summary and reasons for adding this item.
“The Power of Different: The Link between Disorder and Genius”- Gail
Saltz, M.D.
ISBN 13: 9781250060013 Published March 7th 2017 by
Flatiron Books.
Summary: “The
Power of Different” is written by a psychiatrist who evaluates the latest
research on how disabilities affect the brain and individuals that have had
these disabilities. Saltz tells stories of many famous geniuses that have had
different kinds of disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, etc. Saltz dives into the
idea that some of the disabilities can be associated with great talents and
minds. He explains that many individuals that have problems with school, social
settings, etc. may be very creative in other aspects such as art, math, etc.
Reasons for adding
to collection: I would add this to my collection because I think this would
be positive read for patrons that may be struggling with these disabilities or
know someone that does. It demonstrates the idea that though there may be
something that is different with them, doesn’t mean that they are inept. Gail Saltz
gives the idea that with these disabilities, they can grow into great talents,
intelligence, etc. That is an idea that would give someone suffering from these
disabilities a positive way of thinking and viewing themselves.
Another reason I
would add this item is because it is a book that does have scientific evidence
behind their opinions. It not only gives positive reinforcement but also gives
understanding of these disabilities and how they are affecting the individual.
A patron that may just have been diagnosed with ADHD or depression may find
this book helpful to better understand what is going with their body or mind.
Being able to give patrons credible and helpful information is what we are here
for.
“Owning It: Stories about Teens with Disabilities”- Donald R. Gallo
ISBN 13: 9780763632557 Published February 26th 2008 by
Candlewick Press
Summary: This item is a
collection of short stories that centers on teens with a variety of physical,
intellectual and emotional disabilities. It gives examples of different teens
and the disabilities they have to deal with. It is a good read for young adults
with disabilities or even those without disabilities to learn more about them.
Reason for adding to collection: I think this would be a
good addition to the collection since it is wholly about teens that suffer from
different kinds of disabilities. It is their real stories of dealing with the
many struggles that comes along with having these disabilities. It will give
teens an understanding of how these disabilities affect people but also how
they can relate to their stories. It will also help others not affected by
these conditions to be more understanding of the struggles these people face.
Another reason is that this item will be beneficial to
patrons that suffer from these disabilities and give them the encouragement
they need. They will see they aren’t alone and that others may be struggling
with the same things. It can be helpful for those that are also new to these
disabilities and need understanding of what they may go through in the future.
Ability Magazine
ISSN: 1062-5321 Publisher-Chet Cooper
Summary: Ability magazine is specified to break some of the stereotypes
of disabilities and show the normalcy of them in our society. They focus on the
‘ability’ rather than the disability of people. It covers the latest in health,
medicine, mental wellness, etc. It focuses on the accomplishments of people
with disabilities around the world and also opportunities available to them. It
also has the ability to be scanned to tablets and smart phones to listen to for
people with limited eyesight or blindness.
Reasons for adding to collection: I think this would be a great addition to the collection for
patrons with disabilities since it contains resources that are beneficial to
them. It gives readers resources for employment and advancement. Also, shares
stories of people with disabilities accomplishments and successes to encourage
others to overcome these struggles. It includes medical expertise on some of
these disabilities that can help give readers understanding of what may be
going on to them.
Another reason this resource would be good is the ability
for patrons that have difficult seeing or that are blind are able to read this
resource. It features the ability to scan the magazine to a smart phone or
tablet and let the patron listen to the articles. It is just another way to adhere to all types
of people and their abilities.
