Helpful Webpages for Understanding Disabilities and Library Accessibility
Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies
http://www.ala.org/ascla/
This webpage is very
helpful for understanding ways we can be more accessible to those with
disabilities and challenges. It also gives professional tools and tips for making
your library friendlier to those with disabilities. I picked this webpage because I think it will
be a site that is beneficial to all libraries whether you are public, special,
etc. The ALA website is also very commonly used so it will be familiar to most
users.
The ARC (for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities)
This is a great
webpage to use for understanding the different disabilities out there. Also, if
you are wanting information about resources out there for disabled folks. Also,
they have webinars and tools for understanding how to be more accessible to
these patrons.
Center for Literacy and Disability Studies
This webpage is great
for finding resources and products that can help making reading easier for
patrons with disabilities. It also has links and articles to give more
information and insight into how to help patrons with disabilities. Just like the
other webpages it helps to have resources to better understand the challenges
these patrons face. With this insight, you can better serve them in your
library.
National Disability Navigator Resource Collaborative
This is another great
webpage for finding more information and resources to better serve these
patrons. It offers webinars and presentations that can be attended as well as
fact sheets and guides. Some of the information is about medication and other
things that are not going to be addressed. However, it is good to have a
resource for facts and up to date information. It goes along with knowing your
patrons to better serve them.
