Funding for Accessibility in Libraries
Listed below are three grant opportunities public libraries can apply for to help create a library that is accessible to all patrons with all types of abilities. These grants can help with programs, technology, services, etc. that can help patrons that are disadvantaged or unable to access information as easily as others.
1. Special Projects funding through Texas State Library and
Archives Commission
This grant will be a good opportunity to help with creating
services, redesigning the library building, etc. to better serve patrons with
disabilities. The link below gives more details and guidelines for this grant.
Application must be submitted by March 8, 2018. “Goals and Purposes- 13 Texas
Administrative Code (TAC) §2.41: This grant program provides funds for programs
that expand library services to all members of the library’s community. It
enables libraries to develop programs for populations with special needs.” (pg.
3). This is directly from the grant guidelines page on their website.
2. The American Dream Grant
This grant is for libraries to “expand services to adult
English language learners and/or adults in need of basic education and
workforce development”. Many disabled patrons would need help with finding work
if they can or other educational needs. You must create an ALA profile to
access the application. The due date for the application is every February, so
the due date has passed for this year. It looks to be funded by Dollar General
and administered by American Library Association. The goal is ‘of developing
tools and resources for libraries and library staff to provide effective
literacy services to adult learners in their communities and across the country
3. Autism Welcome
Here: Library Programs, Services and More Grant
This grant is for libraries to help with providing services
and programs for patrons with Autism. “Applicants may propose to initiate a
new, creative program or service, bring an already-existing, successful program
or service to their library for the first time, or enhance a program or service
they already offer. All programs or services proposed must benefit people with
autism or their families, directly or indirectly. Funds may be used to hire a
trainer to present a workshop, to buy program materials, to pay for staff, etc”.
The goal is to connect libraries with the Autistic community and creating awareness
of the individual’s needs. The deadline has already passed but it seems to be
an annual grant opportunity.
